Stop the water if it is safe

Turn off the internal stop tap, normally found beneath the kitchen sink, under the stairs or near the point where the mains supply enters the property. If water is close to sockets, appliances or the consumer unit, do not step into it or touch electrical equipment.

Reduce the damage

  • Open cold taps to drain the remaining supply after the stop tap is off.
  • Move possessions away from the leak and use containers or towels where safe.
  • Do not attempt a repair on hot, pressurised or inaccessible pipework.
  • Photograph visible damage for your records or insurer.

Give the plumber useful information

Share where the leak is, whether the water is isolated, whether electrics are affected and any access issues. Clear information helps the response desk send the right professional and equipment.

Safety first. If there is immediate danger, fire, suspected gas escape or risk to life, leave the area and contact the appropriate emergency service. Online guidance cannot diagnose a property fault.
