Manage the leak from inside
Keep people away from bulging ceilings and wet electrical fittings. Place a container beneath drips only where it is safe, move valuables and photograph the affected rooms.
Stay off the roof
Wet tiles, wind and damaged roof coverings make ladders and roofs particularly dangerous. Do not climb up to fit a temporary sheet during poor weather.
Prepare for inspection
- Note when the leak started and the direction of the weather.
- Photograph internal staining and any visible external damage from ground level.
- Explain whether the loft can be accessed safely.
- Tell the roofer about solar panels, extensions or previous repairs.
Safety first. If there is immediate danger, fire, suspected gas escape or risk to life, leave the area and contact the appropriate emergency service. Online guidance cannot diagnose a property fault.
